Description

We cordially invite everyone to attend OCA's 14th Dragon Boat Festival which will be held Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Raddison Hotel. This year, OCA will honor Assemblymember Dave Jones for his commitment to the Asian Pacific Islander Community. OCA will be honoring Dr. Sonny Chong for his many years of community service. This year we are celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival as a "Timeless tradition, a culture we treasure."

The Dragon Boat is a symbol of unity, civil rights and the future of our Asian Pacific Islander Community. About 2300 years ago, Qu Yuan, a Patriotic Poet and a exemplary for integrity and loyalty, advocated for justice and the rights of the common people. When his state had turned to corruption and was near defeat by a Chin, a neighboring state, he took his own life as the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his legacy of integrity, loyalty and civil rights will continue.

On the Dragon Boat Festival, we will continue Qu Yuan’s legacy by honoring two Asian Pacific Islander Women with integrity and deep loyalty to our community and state. They are also champions for the rights of the common people. The first honoree is Assemblymember Dave Jones advocate for civil rights and a long-time supporter of OCA and many API Organizations. The second honoree is Dr. Sonny Chong, the former president of Capital, and avid supporter and advocate to improving the well-being of Asian Pacific Americans throughout the Greater Sacramento Community.

We will also continue Qu Yuan’s legacy by honoring the next generation of scholars by awarding eight young Asian Pacific Islander children who have demonstrated their ability to think critically, write clearly and effectively communicate how they will improve the well-being of American Asian Pacific Americans if they were elected to be the first Asian Pacific American President.

In keeping with the Dragon Boat Festival Tradition, we have great food, excellent wine from Wilson Winery, beverage
